Description
Maltodextrin is a versatile, corn-derived powder with two popular uses: a body-building additive for homebrew, and a carbohydrate base for homemade sports drinks and drink mixes.
For brewing: If your homebrew beer, cider, or wine kit is coming out thin or watery, maltodextrin adds body, a smoother mouthfeel, and better head retention — without adding noticeable flavour, sweetness, or colour. It’s only about 3% fermentable, so the rest stays in your finished brew for that full, rounded texture, and it’s a handy dairy-free alternative to lactose. Add it on the hot side of your brew (ideally in the kettle) or stir in before cooling; typical usage is 0.8–1.6 oz per gallon.
For sports drinks: Maltodextrin is a common carbohydrate used in homemade sports drinks and drink mixes. It’s nearly flavourless and only lightly sweet, so it blends cleanly into water and flavoured beverages — a popular pick for making your own.
