Exploring Our Own Backyard: A Journey Through Lake Country and West Kelowna

Last weekend, our team at Cork It Wine Making went on an unforgettable wine tasting journey through Lake Country and West Kelowna. Surrounded by rolling vineyards and stunning lake views, our tour was a delightful blend of wine tasting, culinary delights, and relaxing moments on the water…. oh… and lots of laughter!

Our adventure began in Lake Country, where our gracious host Stefani welcomed us to her charming Airbnb nestled on a hilltop overlooking the Okanagan Valley. Stefani, a local wine enthusiast, treated us not only to comfortable accommodations but also to a day on her boat exploring the serene waters on wood lake. We made a memorable stop at Folk Tale Ciders, where the rose cider stole our hearts with its refreshing taste.

Wineries We Explored

  • Gray Monk Winery: Situated with panoramic views of Okanagan Lake, the winery boasts a rich history and a wide range of award-winning wines. Although we didn’t do a tasting at the tasting bar, I have tasted many of their crafted wines and they are fantastic. Andie picked up a bottle of Meritage to add to her collection. We stayed for dinner and sampled many of their dishes on their patio and they were all fantastic! The view here is worth the trip on its own. We witnessed the most beautiful sunset and it was a perfect end to the evening.

  • Arrowleaf Cellars: Arrowleaf Cellars is nestled in the heart of Lake Country and it is known for its picturesque vineyards and stunning lake views. Did we mention the views? This family-owned winery specializes in crafting premium wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Okanagan Valley. We sampled some of Arrowleaf’s varietiels, including their acclaimed Pinot Gris, vibrant Rosé, and robust Pinot Noir. Each wine is meticulously crafted to embody the region’s essence, making Arrowleaf a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts seeking quality and character in every glass. Oh and don’t forget to try the cream puffs! They were the perfect pairing with their summer flight.

  • Blind Tiger Vineyards: A hidden gem for pizza lovers, Blind Tiger served up delicious wood-fired pizzas alongside creative cocktails and their artisanal wines.  The atmosphere was a surf shack meets winery, and we truly digged the vibe.

  • Ex Nihilo Vineyards: We were first welcomed with a tasting of their Xs Imagine bubbly which was a delight, considering the hot weather.  We all agreed their Pinot Noir was definitely something to write home about. The winery’s modern tasting room and serene outdoor patio provide the perfect backdrop for enjoying their premium wines, making Ex Nihilo a destination for both wine connoisseurs and casual enthusiasts alike. We will definitely return here again upon our next visit!

  • 50th Parallel Estate:  50th Parallel Estate Winery offers a modern and scenic setting overlooking Okanagan Lake. Known for its commitment to cool-climate wines, 50th Parallel produces exceptional Pinot Noir, aromatic Gewürztraminer, and many other award winning wines. During our visit, Gillian, a knowledgeable and engaging host, enhanced our experience with her insights and recommendations. Her suggestion of the Magnum Rosé was perfect for our boat ride later that afternoon with the ladies. Thanks Gilian!

  • Intrigue Wines: True to its name, Intrigue Wines intrigued us with their unique blends and warm hospitality, making it a memorable stop on our journey. Guests can enjoy tastings of their approachable and well-crafted wines, such as the popular I Do sparkling wine and the vibrant Social white blend. Their riesling that we sampled was full of citrus and lime making this the ultimate white wine to drink poolside.

Crossing over to West Kelowna, we continued our exploration of the region’s diverse wineries:

  • Mt Boucherie Estate Winery: Known for its extensive portfolio, the winery produces a variety of wines that highlight the diverse terroir of the region. We enjoyed tastings of their bold reds, such as their 2020 Summit and Syrah, as well as elegant and unique whites like OV Chardonnay ( WOW!), and Elder Vicar. The modern tasting room and spacious outdoor patio provide a perfect sit back, relax and savor the wines. They didn’t have a sampling of their No.4 orange wine, but we hope to return and give it a try the next time we visit.

  • The Hatch: This winery combines a rustic aesthetic with a touch of whimsy. Upon our visit we were welcomed into a charming, barn-style tasting room adorned with unconventional art and décor, reflecting the winery’s playful spirit. The Hatch produces a diverse range of wines, including their acclaimed Screaming Frenzy and B. Yanco labels, each crafted with creativity and care. This distinctive vibe, coupled with their high-quality wines, makes The Hatch a memorable destination for anyone seeking a fun and unorthodox wine tasting.

  • Crown and Thieves: This was the perfect way to end the tour. This was a captivating and immersive experience unlike any other! Stepping into the winery feels like entering a bygone era, with its vintage, speakeasy-inspired décor and enchanting atmosphere. The tasting room, designed to resemble an old-world castle, provides an intimate and mysterious setting for wine tastings. We got to explore a range of handcrafted wines, including their robust reds to elegant whites. Their Malbec truly showcases the region’s potential for producing bold and expressive red wines. Mel finally found what she was looking for! The rooftop patio offers stunning views of the Okanagan Valley, making Crown and Thieves a perfect spot to relax and savor exceptional wines in a truly distinctive environment.

  • Staff Picks

  • Andie’s Favorites: Ex Nihilo Pinot Noir and Arrowleaf Fieldhouse left a lasting impression on Andie, highlighting the diversity and craftsmanship of Lake Country’s wines.

  • Mel’s Top Picks: Crown and Thieves Malbec and Le Hatch 2019 Franc Says Relax captured Mel’s attention with their rich flavors and memorable finishes.

Our journey through Lake Country and West Kelowna was more than a wine tour; it was a celebration of friendship, culinary delights, and the artistry of winemaking. Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or simply love exploring new flavors, this region promises an experience that will linger in your memory long after you’ve returned home. Plan your own adventure and discover why Lake Country and West Kelowna are beloved destinations for wine enthusiasts worldwide.
